Display Windows Live Messenger in the notification area under Windows 7

With Windows 7, Windows Live Messenger has a dynamic icon displaying your status directly in the taskbar and no longer in the notification area (systray) that was the case in previous versions of Windows. A quick technique will allow us to rediscover this previous behavior.

Start by closing all instances of Live Messenger then right click Properties on the icon in question — from the start menu or from the taskbar.

Then go to the tab Compatibility then tick Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) in the drop-down list.

Make OK to validate and then start Live Messenger. The man-shaped icon is now back in the notification area. Remember that with Windows 7, it is possible to move each of these icons whatever you want.
