Windows 8.1 integrates the logger app for the touch part of the OS that lets you capture the audio from your PC. Small drawback, impossible to know where the recorded audio files are stored. The only way to access it is to share them or use the application in question. Discover the storage folder in this article.

Each file is saved in the M4A audio format.
In our example, we are looking for the test file.
It is stored in the installation folder of the application which is specific to each user profile. Are you still following?
Indeed, applications installed from the Windows Store are synchronised in the cloud with your Microsoft account (online account with which you log in to your session) to automatically install on your other PCs/Tablets.
So in our example, the file is located here:
C:\Users\your_name_d_user\AppData\Local\Packages\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\LiveComm\3a318f282dc1e957\120712-0049\Att\20000f00
You see for yourself that this path is really not easy to access it (hidden folders, folders that change according to the user...).
In short, the easiest way is to open the user folder via the left column of the Windows Explorer, then simply run a search with the file name and add the extension” .m4a“.
The file name corresponding to the name visible in the application Recorder.
A practical application from which only one option is missing: choosing the storage folder for saved files!
Good morning! I am very interested in your recorder because I am a musician “of the shadow” who needs to record his instrumental productions... For the moment, I am looking to know the level of quality of the sound possible with your recorder and how to adjust the volume of my instrument and your recorder... Please give me some advice or another free possibility of writing... All my friends Michel Pommier
Good morning! It’s a really basic recorder provided with Windows 8. To record music, I advise you the Audacity software. You will find on the internet a lot of tutorials to do whatever you want.
C:\Users\y username\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.WindowsSoundRecorder_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Indexed\Recordings
for my part, it’s probably due to the fact that I'm on a local account
Yeah, it probably has to play.
Great, thank you Manu, because for me it’s the same and I confess that I couldn't have found it all alone.
Thank you very much
Alain
thank you I'll go with the solution at the top but reading your comment I found
Thank you to You Manu
I can't find her in the bar looking for... is there any other way to find him?
Good morning,
I don't know if you can answer me. I did an 1h20 interview with Voice Recorder pro on my Windows Phone 8.1 (Lumia 520). The file appears in the app but the playback does not work and cannot save on the Drive. I was wondering if there was any other way to get the audio file back?
Thank you in advance,
I'm exactly the same as you, I have a Lumia 635 and I used Voice Recorder...
I can‘t recover the file by connecting the laptop to the computer, I don’t know what to do!
Thank you so much for this information! The M4a files are then readable by any drive? I am travelling abroad, my son has to register for his German classes and I would like to make sure that his teacher can read the files easily. Happy New Year to you!
This software is the worst I've ever seen! Totally unable to recover my files despite all the tips... As long as they have a software like this, they should have put nothing at all!
when you want to move a file you have to right click and send to because if you only copy paste the file is unreadable...
It doesn't work for me! I wanted to send an audio file that I created with the recorder, but unable to find it out of application and the application does not allow to send it... What to do?
it’s C:\Users\ludo\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.WindowsSoundRecorder_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Indexed\Recordings
Good morning,
During a recording for a school interview my computer turned off (more battery).
My worries: by typing.m4a in my search bar, I can't find the corresponding record.
Did the software save me somewhere my file?
Thank you in advance for your answer,
CDT
Antoine
I am unable to retrieve my recording, despite an hour of search and many attempts!
thank you very much
Otherwise, to despair them, you can still click on your PC and search all the sound files, even if its has to take 5 minutes, because personally, even by searching microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe I find nothing in my LocalState!
good evening I‘m bored because I no longer have its I had windows 8 I replaced it with windows 8.1 I don’t know if it comes from my loudspeakers or not
Good morning,
Thank you, it’s interesting.
how to find a record deleted by mistake on this application?
Good morning Benjamin Denis,
I am on Windows 8 (not tablet) and I can't find any.m4a files created by the recorder. The names of my PC’s folders are very different from yours.
Happy day without Covid19!
Thank you very much for your help.
