Save/restore your bookmarks in Firefox 3

Firefox 3 offers different backup/restore methods of your bookmarks grouped in the Library. You can export your favorites to HTML format or save them as a JSON file that allows Firefox to list them chronologically. Don't lose your bookmarks, do regular backup by learning how!

Start by opening Firefox 3 and then the Library module from the menu Bookmarks then Organise the bookmarks...

You can also press the keys Ctrl + Shift + B.

Save your bookmarks

We will now detail the 2 backup methods proposed by the browser: HTML export and JSON backup.

1era method — HTML Export

Once opened, click on the button Import and safeguard.

Here, choose Export to HTML format... then select the location where you want to perform the backup.

2e method — JSON Backup

This second method has the advantage of classifying backups chronologically in order to restore them at a specific date — in the same way as a Windows restore point.

To do this, click again on the menu Import and safeguard then on Save...

Choose the backup location using the dialog box and click the button Save.

Now you know how to quickly and easily make backups of your Internet favorites. The second step is to learn how to restore them.

Restoration of your bookmarks

1era method — HTML Importation

You can import any type of HTML file in other words it is not necessary to have an export of this type using Firefox. This system therefore offers greater flexibility!

To proceed with the restoration, click on the button Import and safeguard then on Import in HTML format...

An assistant runs offering you to import your bookmarks from:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer;
  • From an HTML file;

So opt for the second proposal and click on Next.

Then search for the relevant file and click on Open.

Your bookmarks are now present in the Library.

2e method — Restoration JSON

This process assumes that you have previously made a backup using the Firefox 3 backup function (see paragraph above).

To restore your favorites, click Import and safeguard then unfold the menu Restore.

Simply click on the date of your choice to retrieve all your bookmarks on the date in question. Note that these are displayed in this form YYYY — MM — DD (Y for Year, M for Month and D for Day).

You also have the option to open a file that would not appear in this list by clicking on Choose a file...

Now that you know more about saving and restoring your bookmarks in Firefox 3, take the lead and don't wait for a PC crash! Losing your favorites is really very unpleasant...
