Foxmarks Bookmark Synchroniser is an online service accessible after free registration and installation of an extension in Firefox.
In addition to offering an online synchronisation feature of your bookmarks, this extension goes much further and offers, among other things, the following features:
- Backup/restore of bookmarks;
- Sharing favorites with friends;
- Online access directly from the official website (no special installation required);
- Possibility to create different profiles (personal, professional, etc.);
- Mobile phone access;
- Backup to personal FTP server;
Here is the official video (in English) offering an overview of the various functions. Interesting to see given the range of options Foxmarks offers.
The purpose of this guide is to describe the entire process of setting up Foxmarks Bookmark Synchroniser, from the installation to its actual use.
Step 1 — Installation
Start by downloading the extension in question:
Once downloaded, proceed to the installation like any Firefox extension and then restart the browser.
Step 2 — Registration for Foxmarks Service
Upon restarting Firefox, Foxmarks automatically launches a service registration wizard.
Click on Next, Foxmarks then asks you if you already have an account. Check the box No, please help me create one. then click on the button Next.
Foxmarks now asks you to fill out traditional fields of information (ID, e-mail, password). If a red icon in the form of an exclamation point appears next to a field, it means that the information entered is incorrect — for example, a nickname already used by someone else.
Click again on Next to validate the creation of the account.
Congratulations! You now have a Foxmarks account.
Step 3 — Settings of basic options
A second wizard appears, just after the registration procedure, allowing you to configure some basic options.
Foxmarks asks you first if you also want to sync passwords saved in Firefox online — be careful, a strong password is highly recommended. By default, the choice is positioned on No but free to you, in your soul and conscience to act as you please.
Click on Next then wait a few moments for Foxmarks to sync with their servers.
To finish, click on Finish.
A webpage will then open indicating the number of favorites saved on Foxmarks.
Step 4 — Adding new computers
Although Foxmarks automatically syncs your bookmarks without requiring any particular action on your part, it is necessary to install the extension on each of your PCs and then synchronise them.
To do this, stay on the page previously opened and then click on the button Add anoter Computer or simply follow the following steps:
- Install Foxmarks extension from the official website or Mozilla Add-ons;
- Log in with your credentials;
- Sync your bookmarks;
Step 5 — Online consultation without prior installation
It is not always possible to install Foxmarks on all the computers you encounter — it’s far from being the case. As a result, Foxmarks offers direct access to your favorites via the official website using the button My Account.
All you have to do is enter your credentials and access your management panel, which is not without offering additional features that are very interesting, such as:
- Import of Del.ico.us bookmarks;
- Export in HTML format;
- Sharing favorites;
- Preview in a pop-up window;
- Addition of new bookmarks;
This is only a glimpse both of the potential of this extension/service is full of functions all more useful than the other.
Foxmarks is truly the perfect extension for any nomadic user who needs to manage many bookmarks. But it is also very useful for the user who wants to save/restore your favorites on a specific date. Finally, it is essential for the user who wants to centralise all his favourites thanks to the multiple import/export functions of favorites from different sources.
In short, a must in this area for which I know no viable competitor!
