Privacy work on Windows 7/Vista: 10 case studies

#1 — Windows 7

#2 — Office 2010/2007

Open Word, click on File then Options. In the left column, click on Privacy Management Center ; then on the button Privacy Management Center Settings.

Click on Privacy Options and uncheck the boxes Regularly download a file to detect system problems and Sign up for the product improvement program.

Click successively twice on OK to validate the changes that will apply to the entire Office suite.

#3 — Windows Media Center

Open Windows Media Center. Click successively on Settings, General, Confidentiality and finally, Privacy Settings. Uncheck the box Use the Guide and send information to Microsoft to improve service quality and accuracy then do Save.

Click now on User Experience Settings and uncheck the box Send usage and reliability information to Microsoft then do Save.

#4 — Windows Media Player

Run Windows Media Player and right-click on the blue bar from the top, and then click on Tools then Options. On the tab Confidentiality, uncheck the box I want to participate in the improvement of Microsoft services and software by sending Microsoft information on their use.

Click on OK.

#5 — Microsoft Default Manager

Open Microsoft Default Manager via the Start menu.

Check the box No, I don't want to participate and click on OK.

#6 — Games Explorer

Open theGame Explorer using the Start menu and click on Options. Uncheck the box Collect information about the latest games used.

Click on the button Delete information and click on OK.

#7 — Windows Help and Support

Open thehelp and support via the Start menu and click on Options then Settings.

Uncheck the box Participate in the Aid Improvement Program and click on OK.

#8 — Windows Live Messenger (and Live Suite)

Open WLM and click on Options. In the left column, click on Confidentiality and uncheck the box Help improve Windows Live programs by allowing Microsoft to collect information about your system and your use of our software. This data will not be used to identify you personally. and click on OK.

There is no need to repeat this operation for the other programs in the Live suite (Movie Maker, Mail...): it also applies.

Google — Google Chrome

Open Google Chrome and click the key icon in the menu bar. Click on Options then on the tab Advanced Options.

Uncheck the box Help us improve Google Chrome by automatically sending usage statistics and error reports to Google located in the part Confidentiality. Click on Close.

#10 — Google Earth

Open Google Earth and click on Tools then Options. On the tab General, in the part Usage statistics, uncheck the box Send usage statistics to Google and click on OK.

It is necessary to repeat these operations when the software is reinstalled or updated.

A very large number of software sends usage data and statistics to improve their products and services. But there is no guarantee that this data is not used for commercial or other purposes. All this is sorely lacking in transparency on the part of publishers. Note that this does not only apply to Windows but to MacOS X as shown in the latest screenshot of Google Earth.
